The title of this lecture presupposes that Jesus Christ was previously upon earth. It is a fact of history that nearly 2,000 years ago he preached a message of salvation at Jerusalem and the surrounding districts; and that after a few years he was crucified by the Roman Authorities at the instigation of the Jews.
It is also a fact of history that as a result of the work which was carried on by his disciples after his death, the gospel message spread so rapidly that by the beginning of the fourth century the whole of the Western Roman Empire had turned from paganism to Christianity. The Bible plainly reveals the reason for the first coming of Jesus Christ, and just as clearly shows that he, of necessity, must come again. An earnest perusal of all the facts concerning his great work in the past, and what he is yet to accomplish, will convince the listener that the Bible is indeed the word of God.
Consider what the Bible says in Exodus 32:1 – “And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him” (Exo 32:1).
Moses, who is a type of Christ, was on Mount Sinai receiving the law and the plan of the tabernacle, and the children of Israel grew weary. Consider the anti-type, Jesus: it has been ~2000 years since Christ was on the earth, and most have grown weary and completely stopped waiting for his return.
